We have two daughters, Digna (46) and Merel (43).&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;\u2028How long have you been a member of the Family Fund?&lt;\/em&gt;&lt;br \/&gt;\nThe ties with the Family Fund led to my mother's helping with the birth of  Iman Sprenger in July 1942 while she stayed with the Sprenger family on Duinbeek during the war. My father travelled to Middelburg very regularly after the war to attend the Family Meeting, as did my aunt. I myself became a member at the Family Meeting in 1967, i.e. during my 21st year.&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;How long have you been active in the family fund, and in what position(s)?&lt;\/em&gt;&lt;br \/&gt;\nI was asked to become an administrator in 2000 and remained so until the 2016 Family Meeting because, according to the terms of the contract, I then had to step down.  I was very much involved in the establishment of the Hurgronje Chair at University College Roosevelt in Middelburg. After three years of negotiations with UCR and Utrecht University, the dedicated chair was established with much ceremony in Middelburg in 2013, for the period of five years with the mission of the History of Zeeland in the World, after which, in 2017, the Family Fund decided to extend the funding of the chair for an additional five years starting from 2018.&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;From the beginning, Professor Dr Arjan van Dixhoorn's one-day-a-week appointment has been the great inspiration through which his students have written many papers following their research. The best have been compiled into two books over the past 10 years. Meanwhile, one external PhD student has been awarded a doctorate with Van Dixhoorn, namely Dr Peter G. van Druenen, president of the Royal Zeeland Scientific Society, and two more will follow in the very near future. (An external PhD student is someone who has to write the dissertation in his own time and therefore has no appointment at a university).&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;On behalf of the Hurgronje Family Fund, I was on the Supervisory Board of the dedicated Hurgronje Chair. As an administrator, I was the initiator and through this membership I was involved with the chair from the beginning to the end, so I went to Middelburg fairly regularly for consultations with Arjan and\/or the dean of UCR. It was a privilege that I was able to witness that process.&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;\u2028&lt;em&gt;What motivates you to be active for the family fund?\u2028&lt;\/em&gt;&lt;br \/&gt;\nAt some point I was asked by the administrators to become an administrator and I thought it would be fun and very honourable to do something for the Family Fund in this way. As a result, I regularly visited Walcheren for meetings and the like. With the establishment of the chair, I was in Middelburg even more often to attend meetings and consult with one person or another.&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;What memorable moments stand out to you from your time within the family fund so far?\u2028&lt;\/em&gt;&lt;br \/&gt;\nAlmost too many to name! To the convivial family meetings, the celebrations of the various lustres, the summer meetings around the country and, of course, the cort\u00e8ge at UCR when the Hurgronjel Chair was established. I really only have good memories.&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;How do you see the future of the Family Fund?\u2028&lt;\/em&gt;&lt;br \/&gt;\nSince the Family Fund cannot be dissolved (Article 14 of the contract) and it does not look like there will be no more descendants of the couple Isaac Hurgronje and Josina Phoenix in the world, the Family Fund will keep growing. Its membership will expand. This entails that the work of the College of Administrators will increase.&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;What is (was) your profession?\u2028&lt;\/em&gt;&lt;br \/&gt;\nI am a lawyer and have worked all my working life for the municipality of Leiden in a wide range of positions.&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;What are your hobbies\/interests?&lt;\/em&gt;&lt;br \/&gt;\nI try to collect Middelburg silver from the 18th century as a hobby. As the larger pieces are very pricey, I don't succeed very much and this collecting is limited to buying spoons and forks.&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;To keep moving, I cycle daily through the polders near Leiden, crossing the Zijl river by ferry, buying cheese from a good cheese farm and meat from a farm where Lakenvelders are bred in a very sustainable way. For instance, the cows are bred naturally by a bull and all calves stay with their mother for one year. The young oxen are only slaughtered after two years.&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;&lt;img src=\"https:\/\/hurgronje.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/lakenvelders1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5916\" \/&gt;&lt;img src=\"https:\/\/hurgronje.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/lakenvelders2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5918\" \/&gt;&lt;br clear=\"all\"&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;What does your ultimate day of self-care look like?\u2028&lt;\/em&gt;&lt;br \/&gt;\nI love going to Walcheren for a day. It's lovely to drive over the dams and dykes to Walcheren, with the beautiful views. The same goes for the ride to Walcheren via Bergen op Zoom. Once you are past that place, you can see the sky changing colour. This is due to the reflection of the sun on the seawater. Of course, the sun has to be shining then.
