In 1878, this choir was expanded to include boys’ voices, establishing a lasting tradition of choral singing with young singers.

A significant step followed in 1959 with the founding of the Cathedral Choir School, where young singers receive intensive musical training. From 1968, girls were also admitted, further broadening the choir. After a period of changes, the choir took on its current form and name in 1974: the Utrecht Cathedral Choir.

Today, the KKU is an independent association that sings during Mass at St Catherine’s Cathedral around thirty times a year. Since 2021, the choir has been conducted by Hester Steensma-Westra and works closely with the Utrecht Choir School, a unique primary school where general education is combined with intensive singing and music tuition. Pupils from Years 7 and 8 actively sing with the choir, ensuring that the historic tradition of young voices lives on. This collaboration creates a distinctive sound and a strong sense of continuity within the ensemble.

In this way, the Utrecht Cathedral Choir combines a rich tradition with an active role in contemporary musical life, in which liturgy, education and concert practice are closely intertwined.

In addition to its liturgical duties, the choir undertakes an annual concert tour. This year, the KKU is travelling to Zeeland together with the pupils from Years 7 and 8. During this trip, the choir will be staying at the StayOkay in Domburg (Westhove Castle) and will give three performances:

Thursday 14 May, 10.00 am during the Ascension Day service at the Grote of Sint-Nicolaaskerk in Brouwershaven.

Saturday 16 May, 5.00 pm with an Evensong at the Grote of Maria Magdalenakerk in Goes.

Sunday 17 May, 10.00 am during the service at St James’ Church in Vlissingen.

Admission to these performances is free and all interested parties are warmly welcome.

The Hurgronje Family Fund has provided financial support to make this trip possible.

The Utrecht Cathedral Choir (KKU) has a long history dating back to 1869, when the St. Gregorius Magnus male voice choir was founded at St Catherine’s Cathedral in Utrecht to provide musical accompaniment for the liturgy.
