The batch of components to be treated – comprising parts from the Grote Kerk in Breda and other components from Germany – was insufficiently large, which meant the costs became too high. In addition, the expiry date of the methyl methacrylate was approaching.

After lengthy deliberation, the German government and the Grote Kerk in Breda ensured that the remaining amount was paid by them. No additional costs were charged for the front panel; that was a lovely gesture on their part. The front panel was transported to Zottegem on 14 November and collected by Tim Kemperman on 25 November, who then took it to the church in Stavenisse. This means that all the components are now ‘back home’.

The plan is to install the front panel on 1 December and then proceed with the final completion of the mausoleum. After that, the temporary flooring will be removed and the wooden fence between the pulpit and the wall will be put back in place. Once all this is complete, the memorial will once again be on display in all its glory in Stavenisse. We hope to be able to invite you at a later date to the unveiling and provide you with further details.

The unveiling of the monument was scheduled for 30 January 2026. However, on 19 January, Rien de Graaf informed the secretariat:

On 22 December, the sculptor Tim Kemperman passed away suddenly at the age of 51. As you can imagine, this came as a great shock. On Friday 2 January, Tim was buried in his hometown of Bergen op Zoom, amidst tremendous public interest.
Following his death, Hendrik Jan Tolboom from the Cultural Heritage Agency and architect Erik Jan Brans met last week with Tim’s brother, Marnix Kemperman – who, together with Tim, had taken over their father’s business – to discuss what still needs to be done.
Marnix is determined to complete his brother Tim’s work himself as a tribute. He deserves every respect for this. This naturally means that a later date must be set for the unveiling. This week, Marnix will be assessing what he can start work on and when, and what his target date for completion will be.

Finally, on 30 April, Rien de Graaf announced:

Following a long period of preparation, research, restoration and finishing touches, the mausoleum of Hieronymus van Tuyll van Serooskerke will be unveiled on Friday afternoon, 29 May, at the Reformed Church in Stavenisse. You will receive an invitation to this unveiling from the municipality of Tholen and on behalf of the Reformed Church in Stavenisse.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you warmly for all your help and the pleasant interactions we have had. We hope to see you on 29 May.

The unveiling, conducted by Marleen Sijbers, mayor of the municipality of Tholen, has now taken place. During the gathering, a moment’s silence was observed in memory of Tim Kemperman, and Rien de Graaf received a royal honour in recognition of his many years of service to the community, the Tholen municipal archives and the Reformed Church in Stavenisse.

Photos documenting the progress of the restoration can be found here.

Previous posts in this series:
1 December 2025
22 May 2025
5 Dec 2024
17 July 2024
31 January 2023
July 2023
3 April 2023
3 February 2023
15 December 2021

On 1 December, the secretariat received an upbeat email from Rien de Graaf, church warden of the Reformed Church in Stavenisse: At last, there is some good news to report regarding the mausoleum, following a long period of uncertainty about the date on which the Ibach treatment could take place.
