On November 1, a book by Oscar Garschagen and Anja de Groene entitled ‘Masterpieces of the Scheldt and the Seine’ was published by De Vrije Uitgevers. It describes a future journey by ultra-modern barge from Zeeland to France.
The construction of the New Ship Lock in Terneuzen has attracted tens of thousands of curious Terneuzen residents, holidaymakers and countless official delegations in recent years. What a ‘masterpiece’ it sounded admiringly from their mouths. This book is not only about this new sea lock, but also about two other masterpieces of concrete, steel, water and political ingenuity: the cross-border merger of the ports of Vlissingen, Terneuzen and Ghent into North Sea Port and the construction of the 107-kilometre-long Canal Seine-Nord Europe in northern France. Between the Scheldt and the Seine, this will create a new, sustainable waterway for Dutch inland navigation. With Terneuzen as the gateway to Paris for large inland navigation. These three masterpieces play a major role in greening businesses and freight transport. ‘A road of 1,000 miles begins with one first step’ said a Chinese sage. A long journey to a sustainable future has begun in Zeeland, Flanders and northern France.
The book is on sale at bookshops for €29.50.
The publication of this book was made possible thanks to a financial contribution from the Hurgronje Family Fund.
