Exhibition Salomon Mesdach

16 February 2025

In its successful ‘Zeeland Masters from the Golden Age’ series, Stadhuismuseum Zierikzee is now organising its seventh temporary exhibition. The first exhibition had an introductory character and, together with the accompanying publication, offered an overview of works from the Goedaert Collection. The second exhibition provided an overview of the oeuvre of Zeeland’s master painter Franchoys Ryckhals; the third focused on portraits by Zeeland’s Golden Age masters; the fourth on Zierikzee’s master painter Arnoldus van Anthonissen; the fifth on still lifes by Zeeland’s Golden Age masters and the sixth on Zeeland’s leading architectural painter of the day, Dirck van Delen.

ln the current temporary exhibition within the Zeeland Masters from the Golden Age series, the work of Salomon Mesdach (1600-1632) is highlighted.

The portraits of Salomon Mesdach (probably 1575/80-ca. 1628) are characterised by a high degree of refinement. As a portrait painter, he left an important mark on the Middelburg art market in the early seventeenth century. Yet his work remained largely unnoticed until now. Recent research for this first monographic exhibition on Mesdach sheds new light on the life and oeuvre of the unknown but beloved master.

Almost as a matter of course, this exhibition will be accompanied by a publication with extensive background information based on new scientific research initiated by the Stadhuismuseum. This time, the research and publication will be done by the highly accomplished art historian Dr Carla van de Puttelaar, assisted by Prof Rudi Ekkart.

More information about the exhibition and the publication can be found on the museum’s website (Dutch only).

The Hurgronje Family Fund made a financial contribution to the realisation of the accompanying publication.
