Kicking a scene in church

4 June 2025

‘Kicking a scene in church’ is a musical-cultural activity for primary school pupils now well known on Schouwen-Duiveland, intended for all island schools. For over 20 years, mostly in-house productions have been made for the middle groups of these schools. Four times a year, a special working group with musicians and volunteers organises eye-catching projects. This reaches several hundred children. All kinds of music take centre stage, with a slight preference for classical music unfamiliar to the children.

The performances are held in the (large) Nieuwe Kerk, allowing this foundation to record another fine educational activity in its programming. This year’s productions include “In Zeeland staat een huis” (about dancing through the ages in the same mansion), “Bach op de Boerderij” (Farmers’ Cantata) and a production of church organ and percussion.

A remarkable project was organised this spring. Two performances celebrated the 200th birthday of the composer Johann Strauss. This featured the famous waltz “An der schönen blauen Donau”. In cooperation with the Zeeuws Seniors Orchestra from Kapelle, as it were grandfathers and grandmothers with grandchildren, a performance was given about “the waltz”, about Strauss’s time, about the three-quarter time and with dancers in beautiful clothes from the 19th century.

On 9 April 2025, it was on. Several hundred primary school pupils enjoyed it and the reactions kept pouring in for a long time. The Zeeland Seniors Orchestra was also enthusiastic. Thus, young and old were together. Drama, dance, movement, beat, culture: they were ideal lessons. The photographs bear witness.

This project was made possible by a financial contribution from the Hurgronje Family Fund.
