Summer Concert Vlissingen, 23 August 2025

2 December 2025

On Saturday 23 August 2025, the Oude Markt in Vlissingen was transformed into a vibrant open-air stage during the summer concert organised by the Vlissingen Classical Music Foundation. From 3 p.m. onwards, the square was filled with sounds and atmospheric music in a programme that was accessible to everyone: tourists, residents and chance passers-by.

The event began with a performance by the Vlissingen Violin Orchestra, which presented a varied repertoire: classical, pop and film music — a festive mix that quickly attracted the attention of local residents and holidaymakers. Immediately after this concert, free singing and violin workshops were offered. Visitors could participate without registering: play the violin or sing, and later join the group in a final concert. This interactive component created a lively atmosphere and encouraged participation.

In the early evening, Het Strijkkwartet provided an intimate transition to the second half of the day. On the terraces of the Oude Markt, thanks in part to the cooperation of cafés and restaurants, listeners enjoyed quiet, recognisable music while enjoying snacks and drinks — a successful terrace arrangement that gave the concert a relaxed and cosy atmosphere.

The highlight followed at 8:30 p.m., when the Blue Jeans Big Band took to the stage. With swinging jazz and big band classics by Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and others, the Oude Markt was transformed into a dance floor full of energy and nostalgia. Swinging, clapping along or just enjoying yourself — it was all possible.

All in all, according to the organisers, the summer concert attracted around 400 visitors. A good number, which testifies to the success of the event: despite the changeable weather and competition from other summer activities, many people found their way to the Oude Markt.

Due to increased costs, it was not possible to finance the three concerts originally planned — in the end, it remained this one concert. Nevertheless, the day was a great success. Not only because the audience was able to enjoy high-quality music in the open air, but also because the event contributed to the Foundation’s objective: to make classical and light music accessible to residents and visitors of Vlissingen. In one afternoon and evening, the organisation brought culture to the city, strengthened Vlissingen’s image as a tourist destination and gave residents the opportunity to enjoy themselves together.

The summer concert on 23 August 2025 will undoubtedly be remembered as a warm, musical summer’s day, when the Oude Markt resounded with emotion, movement and togetherness — exactly as intended.

The Hurgronje Family Fund made a financial contribution to the realisation of this concert.
