From Peter de Rijke, we received the following report on the passenger van for the residents of the Ordinary Living Foundation that we previously reported on:
The beginning
Having our own van, preferably a sustainable one, was a big wish of our residents’ group. The residents are eight young people with disabilities who, together with their caretakers, would like to be active in society. Having their own van gives them more freedom and convenience than expensive, inconvenient taxis.
We enjoy all kinds of joint activities: going to the cinema, shopping, going on holiday, taking a walk in the woods, visiting a sick fellow resident or discovering fun attractions in the region on weekends.
How it came about
To make this happen, parents initially provided the contacts. A nationwide and successful quest for sponsors willing to make financial contributions was undertaken. In addition, publicity was sought through the media. In the programme “de Zeeuwse Kamer” of Omroep Zeeland, parent Peter de Rijke and Marjolein Krebbeks explained the project. Reporter Conny den Heijer wrote an article for the local newspaper, including an appeal for volunteers to drive the van. The process of making the van a reality was steady and prosperous and supported by all the parents.
Very surprising and positive were the high donations from unexpected sources. We are very happy with all the contributions. Very nice amounts but also material donations such as tickets to an amusement park. With our new van, we can go here together.
Results and conclusions
We are very happy with the results of our project. We have achieved our goal of purchasing a van for our residents. We are proud of ourselves as parents and of our children as residents. We have a close-knit group of eight.
Trusting each other, persevering, listening and having the privilege of being well guided by enthusiastic people. Our volunteers have put their heart and soul into this project. They feel connected to ‘their’ van and are proud of it. The residents and ourselves are very happy with the bus!
The Hurgronje Family Fund made a financial contribution to facilitate the purchase of the van.
