Anyone who has ever walked on the beach is familiar with the image: litter washed up on the high tide line. We are amazed (because we ourselves never leave any litter on the beach!) and scandalised, but most of us step over it and leave the beach empty-handed. This is not the case for the initiator of Join us, Save the Sea!
This civilian initiative, which was transformed into a foundation in 2010, helps to clean up beaches by organising volunteers and making materials available. It does this in cooperation with coastal municipalities and nature conservation organisations, among others.
The foundation motivates municipalities to place one (or more) “Jut bins” on the beach and to empty them regularly. These are preferably placed in a visible spot where many people will encounter them. In this way, passers-by are made aware of the issue and are encouraged to take action, for example by collecting waste during a walk on the beach and depositing it in the Jut bin. If everyone does their bit, the beaches will remain tidy and clean.
In addition, the foundation consults with the polluters in an attempt to tackle the problem at its root and eradicate it once and for all. The website of Join us, Save the Sea! can be found here.
The Hurgronje Family Fund recently sponsored the foundation with a sum of money so that it can have jut bags printed, business cards made and its website refined.
