Music competition for Zeeland’s youth 2022

26 September 2022

Music competition for Zeeland’s youth is organised biannually by the Association of Friends of the Zeeland Orchestra. With the competition, the Friends want to encourage young people (aged 6 to 18) to get involved in classical music and offer them the opportunity to gain experience on stage.

The Zeeland Orchestra also likes to meet young talent in the province. On several occasions, a finalist of the competition has performed with the Zeeuws Orkest.

Finalists from the past have already shown their musical talents at all kinds of concerts with orchestras and smaller musical groups. Many have gone on to further musical education and have competed in national music competitions. Violinist Mathieu van Bellen, for instance, is now a well-known soloist.

A postponement but not a cancellation

Originally, the competition was supposed to take place in spring. However, due to a lack of applications as a result of the corona crisis, the organising committee decided to postpone the competition for six months. In this case, a good decision, as it allowed the 2022 edition to take place after all.

Preliminary round and final

The competition covers two days. On Saturday the 24th of September, the preliminary rounds took place at the Zeeuwse Muziekschool in Middelburg and the finalists were selected. Two weeks later, on the evening of October 8, the final will take place in the Zeeuwse Concertzaal in Middelburg.

Jury

The competition’s jury consists of professional musicians, including well-known names such as concert pianist Marianne Boer, alto violist Gisella Bergman, tuba player/radio 4 presenter Ab Nieuwdorp and composer Douwe Eisenga.
