This year marks the 450th anniversary of the liberation of Vlissingen from the yoke of the Spanish occupiers. This is celebrated every year, so too this year. On April 16, the Vlissingen Uprising 1572 was celebrated in the town centre. The Working Group Celebrating Vlissingen’s Resistance 1572 of the Fortress Vlissingen Foundation was in charge of the organisation.
Because it is important that children are acquainted with this historic event, the working group asked children’s book author John Brosens to write a book about it. As a native of Vlissingen, this request did not fall on deaf ears. The booklet was entitled ‘Het schot uit de donderbus’ (The Blast from the Blunderbuss) and has since been published and distributed among senior pupils at all of Vlissingen’s primary schools.
The booklet was printed in an edition of 2000. The Hurgronje Family Fund made a financial contribution to help ensure its publication.
